Hamburg is the rare harbour that lets sightseeing boats in among the working berths. The launches run right under the gantry cranes at Burchardkai and Altenwerder, close enough to read the ship names, then turn back through the Speicherstadt canals where the brick warehouses are floodlit after sundown. Nothing about it is staged; the cranes are loading whether you are there or not.

The Victoria Harbour junks
Victoria Harbour still sails a handful of Chinese junks with battened red sails, and they run against a wall of lit towers on both shores. Malta’s Grand Harbour
The Knights of St John spent two centuries turning two natural inlets into the most fortified harbour in the Mediterranean, and the boats out of Sliema go into every creek of both.
